Deputy Technical Manager
About the role:
The Deputy Technical Manager will support the Technical Manager in overseeing technical operations for offshore and marine projects. The role focuses on ensuring technical integrity, compliance with project specifications, and efficient delivery of work packages across multiple sites and vessels. The Deputy Technical Manager will act as a point of contact for engineering teams, contractors, and suppliers, and will deputise for the Technical Manager when required.
Key responsibilities:
Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of technical activities for offshore and onshore projects, ensuring work is delivered on time, within scope and aligned with company procedures.
Support the preparation and review of engineering method statements, lifting plans, schemes of work, risk assessments and work permits.
Produce and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, material take-offs (MTOs), equipment lists and technical scopes for tendering and procurement.
Liaise with Project Managers, Marine and Operations teams, and discipline engineers to resolve technical issues and ensure smooth project delivery.
Manage and monitor contractor and supplier performance, support contractor pre-qualification and ensure compliance with HSE and quality requirements.
Provide supervision and technical guidance to site engineers, technicians and subcontractors; conduct technical inspections and issue observation reports.
Support mobilisation and demobilisation activities, including yard follow-ups, vessel preparations and offshore handover procedures.
Maintain project registers, technical queries (RFI) logs, non-conformance reports and other project documentation within the company document control system.
Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying technical risks, lessons learned and recommendations for future projects.
Act as deputy for the Technical Manager, representing the technical function in meetings and making decisions within delegated authority.
Technical skills & experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical, Naval, Structural or Offshore Engineering, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in offshore, marine or oil & gas project engineering or technical management; decommissioning experience is desirable.
Practical understanding of offshore construction, lifting operations, scaffolding, rope access and subsea activities.
Experience with preparation and review of method statements, lifting plans and technical scopes for procurement and tendering.
Familiarity with industry standards, regulatory requirements and HSE management applicable to offshore operations.
Proven ability to work with ERP and document control systems; competency in AutoCAD and MS Office applications preferred.
Experience of supplier and contractor management, including contract follow-up and quality assurance processes.
Willingness to travel offshore and to project sites as required.
Skills and personal attributes:
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages are advantageous.
Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
Proactive, flexible and able to operate effectively in a fast-paced, 24/7 operational environment.
Team player with proven leadership skills and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders.
